J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge Visitor & Education Center holds a public meeting today at 1:30 p.m. Topics include: Planned prescribed burns on Sanibel Island; Hydrological restoration at the Bailey Tract; and posting a state-mandated wildlife buffer zone around the rookery islands in Tarpon Bay.
The Hydrological restoration will benefit local wildlife, such as the Sanibel Island rice rat and secretive marsh birds. The buffer zone is designed to protect colonies of nesting birds.
The public will have opportunity to comment. For more information, contact wildlife refuge manager Paul Tritaik at 239-472-1100 ext. 223.
