FAIRWAY OR COURT? The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club Welcomes You
Jan 27, 2022 02:03PM ● By BETH LUBERECKIThe Dunes Golf & Tennis Club welcomes you. There are all kinds of ways to have fun in the sun during a vacation to Sanibel and Captiva islands. And it just might be the perfect time to get out on the golf course or pick up a tennis racket.
Guests at The Inns of Sanibel’s four properties enjoy a sport and social membership at the Dunes Golf & Tennis Club on Sanibel, which is included with their room reservation and good for the duration of your resort stay. So if the urge strikes to hit the links or get out on the tennis court, guests can head to the Dunes for a little exercise and friendly competition.
SERVE IT UP
Inns of Sanibel guests who want to spend some time serving and volleying have plenty of options. All guests have complimentary access to the recently resurfaced Har-Tru tennis courts at the Dunes Golf & Tennis Club during the course of your stay. The front desk staff at each resort can assist in scheduling court time.
Since the Dunes is home to the Blackwood Tennis Academy, guests will find tennis packages that offer instructional clinics, camps, and private lessons for all ages and abilities. Whether they want to learn a new skill, improve their game, or just have fun, the professionals at the academy can make that happen. “It is tennis paradise,” notes Nick Blackwood, cofounder of the Blackwood Tennis Academy.
The Dunes also has a tennis concierge service that will match a guest with a partner at the appropriate skill level. For those who didn’t bring your racket with them on vacation, rental equipment is available. The temporary membership also entitles guests to discounts on tennis apparel.
In addition, the Sanibel Inn and Sunset Beach Inn both have on-site tennis courts available for guest use. An upgrade at Sanibel Inn at the end of 2002 resulted in a newly resurfaced tennis court and the addition of two pickleball courts.
TEE IT UP
The 5,600-yard golf course at the Dunes was designed by ten-time PGA Tour winner Mark McCumber. The 18 holes are laid out in two distinct styles: The front nine is a bit like a links layout, while the backside is set amidst a wildlife preserve sanctioned by the Audubon Society. But the entire course, with its well-maintained greens and bunkers, is framed by some of the most breathtaking native foliage. Keep your eye out for alligators, birds, and other local wildlife.
Players at the Dunes also have the advantage of a golf professional to help them hone their games. Lessons with Nolan Henke, a three-time PGA Tour winner, are a great way for guests to sharpen their skills. “It’s a breathtaking short course abundant with wildlife and challenging water on nearly every hole,” says Henke. Resort guests also enjoy discounts on golf, rental clubs, and golf apparel.
DINING DETAILS
For an authentic island dining experience, the Club Dining Room at the Dunes offers an assortment of crisp salads, homemade soups, sandwiches, burgers, and entrées, while the lounge provides happy hour cocktails daily from 3 to 6 p.m. Resort guests also enjoy a discount on dining room and bar purchases and can check out the Dunes social events calendar for dinner parties, trivia nights, golf outings, and live entertainment.
