Farmers Markets Offer Fresh Foods and Fun!
Oct 01, 2024 08:00AM ● By Ann M. O’PhelanFarmers markets aren’t just a great place to go and get fresh produce, baked goods, seafood, flowers and enjoy food trucks, they’re a great place to get out and socialize. You’ll likely bump into friends or neighbors or even meet new people. “There is truly something for everyone at a farmers market,” says Betsy Ventura - Co-Owner of Local Roots, LLC - operator of eight Farmers Markets in SWFL, including one in Fort Myers at Lakes Park and now a new one at Gateway. Good news! Starting on October 4th on Fridays, from 9 am to 1 pm, Local Roots will be operating a Farmers Market in the Gateway Community.
“The market will be located at the Soccer Park on Griffin Drive, with over 30 local vendors selling all kinds of goodies, such as cheeses, honey, meats, coffee, candles, soaps, flowers, plants, crafts, fresh fruits and veggies, and baked goods,” says Ventura. October will be the opening of the Lakes Park Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 9 am to 1 pm, now in its 15th season. “This is our largest event in one of Lee County's most beautiful parks located centrally on Gladiolus Drive,” adds Ventura. The park offers plenty of chances to bird-watch, walk, bike, roller-skate and check out the many gardens, such as children's community, fragrance, and succulent garden.
In addition to the socialization aspect one can enjoy by visiting a farmers market, there’s a freshness component, a chance to support the local economy, and a reduction of packaging that add to the overall wonderful experience. The produce is mostly harvested a day or two before being sold, and baked items and prepared foods are made daily.
“This type of freshness can't be beat for taste and nutrition,” says Ventura.
By shopping at the farmers markets, you directly support local farmers, bakers, chefs, and artisans—all part of the local economy. Plus, buying directly from a vendor means there’s less packaging, promoting an eco-friendly experience. Local Roots Farmers Market locations are on Sanibel Island and Captiva Island, as well as at Babcock Ranch, Coconut Point, Boca Grande, and Bonita Springs, along with the Fort Myers locations at Lakes Park and now Gateway.
