Having served Sanibel for multiple generations and more than 122 years and counting, Bailey's General Store - 2477 Periwinkle Way has decided it's time for a remodel, including updating the color scheme of the exterior and adding 6,000 square feet of retail space, as reported by the Santiva Chronicle.
Bailey's followed up the news story on Facebook with some words of its own on the expansion.
"Rest assured we will maintain the same family business general store feel as you have enjoyed in past visits," the post said, adding in the comments that work will be done around the other shops in the shopping center so that they may remain open during construction.
The expansion comes at the expense of Island Cinema, which made the difficult decision to close its doors after the COVID-19 pandemic hit last year. The building, located adjacent south of Bailey's, will be demolished.
"We are also sad to see the cinema go, but COVID made continued operations financially impossible," the store commented on the same thread on Facebook.
The expansion will allow new areas to come into the store and to relocate/improve fan favorites, such as the coffee bar, liquor store, hardware store, and gift shop. The parking lot will also see some changes, including more spaces, more vegetation, and more bicycle and electric vehicle parking.
The property, itself, will also see some changes. The gas station on-site will become a restaurant.
With all that said, the owners are dedicated to maintaining the charm of this community staple, avoiding the stereotypical "big box" look and keeping that "low key island feel," commenting that they plan to preserve the special features of the building.
