Fall Fun at Calusa Nature Center!
Oct 01, 2024 08:00AM ● By Ann M. O’PhelanThe Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium have been part of the local community for over 50 years. The Center’s “mission is to inspire people to connect with nature, that is done by educating our guests of all ages about our unique ecosystem, each of our rescued animals, and certain environmental issues concerning our area,” says Executive Director Eric Raddatz. The educational center sits on 105-acres and is home to a butterfly garden, bird aviary, two nature trails, and a dome planetarium theater that seats 90 people. Inside the center is a natural history museum with live animals, plants, and educational exhibits and demonstrations.
This October, plenty is going on at the center. For one, the Haunted Walk is back again. This 61st annual Haunted Walk is known for its dark nature trails and boardwalks that promise frightening adventures for thrill seekers (over 16-years of age). Past attendees have referred to it as ‘One of the Best’ and ‘Fun and Scary.’ It’s all for a good cause— “It’s a fundraiser that helps us care for our animal residents at the Calusa Nature Center,” explains Raddatz. The 1/3-mile haunted trail is sure to thrill! The Haunted Walk will be every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in October, starting at 7:30 pm.
What else is going on at the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium in October is Music Under the Stars. The Center is pairing up with the Americana Country Music Association (ACMA) to host live music under the stars. It all takes place right in the on-site Planetarium. The first concert will be Thursday, October 17, from 7 pm to 9 pm, featuring popular local and touring musicians, and singers, songwriters Brian Smalley, Bill Metts, and Roy Schneider. The trio will share their songs, stories, and amazing guitar skills.
Forest Bathing will take place on the premises with the group, Go Forest Bathing on Monday, October 14, from 9:30 to 11:30 am. A certified guide will lead the group in a meditation session followed by sensory experiences that encourage relaxation and reconnection to nature and self. The benefits help reduce stress and anxiety and improve cardiovascular and immune health.
So, head to the Calusa Natura Center and Planetarium during October. Enjoy some frightening fun, hear some amazing music, and get a little rest and relaxation.
